How it started…

…and how I got hooked.

I learned how to crochet in fall of 2024 using a learn-to-crochet kit. I owe it all to Pierre the Purple Penguin!

Pierre unlocked the door to my new hobby. Many cute little stuffies, fingerless gloves, scarves, and a cardigan and a half later, I am more hooked than ever!

Meet Pierre!

Amigurumi is a specific kind of crochet: it is the art of using crochet to create cute little stuffies (the word is a portmanteau of the Japanese words “ami”, meaning knitted or crocheted, and “nuigurumi”, meaning stuffed doll). As a Suzuki string teacher and general word nerd, I had to keep the portmanteau train on the tracks and began to use the term “Suzukigurumi”!

I’ve been inspired to share these crochet creations with my students after realizing how nicely they fit in with Suzuki string learning. From one of the Happy Farmer’s brown cows to pineapples, tarantulas, chocolate chickens, and super manatees, the possibilities are endless!
